October 28, 2017 at 7:00 pm
Whitney Center for the Arts Celebrates Jazz Legend Thelonious Monk’s 100th Birthday
Tickets ($21/15/10) available here.
American jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk is the second-most recorded jazz composer in history, following Duke Ellington. Whitney Center for the Arts is celebrating the 100th anniversary of his birth with a tributary performance by PUBLIQuartet featuring arrangements and improvisational jazz performances of some of Monk’s seminal works, as well as a classical playlist that includes works by Don Byron and Vijay Iyer.
PUBLIQuartet is the Quartet-in-Residence this season at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, it recently debuted at the Lincoln Center on the Great Performers series, a sold-out Carnegie Hall at Weill Recital Hall and the Newport Jazz Festival. In 2016, PUBLIQuartet was selected by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to perform a live-stream, 90-minute improvised “soundtrack” to the final Presidential Debate, and recently won the ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award for outstanding and innovative approaches to contemporary classical, jazz and world chamber music.
Called “independent-minded” by the New York Times, the PUBLIQuartet is a must-see for classical jazz fans alike.
PUBLIQuartet begins its day at Sheridan College at 1 p.m. with “Mind the Gap,” a free improvisational workshop and composition event focused on exercises in rhythm, harmony, melody, bass and texture. A selection of Sheridan College and local high school music students will participate. The public is encouraged to attend and observe.
The Whitney Center for the Arts would like to thank the Holiday Inn Sheridan for their generous support of our 2017-18 season.
